Adventures in Digital History

Writing the Final Essay

As the due date comes closer for the final essay, I chose to do the digital essay format, which I’m going to post on WordPress. I originally wanted to do an HTML site using some creative embed options, but I sadly don’t have the time to do that and three other essays before next week. So I chose to use WordPress. But I wouldn’t say that’s a bad thing. I’ve been using WordPress to make creative and digitally enhanced projects for the past two years, and I think I’ve gotten pretty good at it.

I figured out how to embed Plotly graphs in WordPress, which means my essay is going to be a lot more interactive that I thought! People will now able to hover over data points and turn things on and off themselves instead of staring at a bunch of still images. I will also be using one or two tools from Voyant to explain things, but thankfully I already know how to embed those! I also have plans to include the Colab Notebook I make the graphs in, which I can share in my GitHub repository for this project and then embed that link.

I have started writing my essay already. It’s fully contained in WordPress because I have to do some fancy commands in the editing block to make footnotes work. I’m pretty much writing this essay similar to how I’ve done previous ones for Dr. McClurken’s classes. That means there will be images, graphs, hyperlinks, etc. I want to make it as visually appealing as I can, while making my method accessible to others who wish to try it out themselves.

That’s about all I have to say on this at the moment. I hope to have this entire project done by next week in preparation for the presentation. Until then, thanks for reading!
